How the Recipe Converter Works

Scaling a recipe sounds simple (just multiply everything) but in practice it's full of small annoyances. Doubling "1/3 cup" gives you "2/3 cup," which is fine. But tripling "3/4 cup" gives you "2 1/4 cups," which requires converting units. And halving "1 tablespoon" gives you "1 1/2 teaspoons," which means switching measurement tools entirely.

This converter handles all of that automatically. Paste your recipe, enter the original and desired serving counts, and every quantity gets scaled with proper fraction formatting and unit conversions where appropriate.

What It Handles

The parser recognizes whole numbers (2), fractions (1/2), mixed numbers (1 1/2), and decimal quantities (0.75). It understands standard cooking units including cups, tablespoons, teaspoons, ounces, pounds, grams, milliliters, and liters, and converts between them when the scaled result would be more practical in a different unit.

Non-numeric instructions like "a pinch of salt" or "to taste" pass through unchanged. The converter only modifies lines that contain measurable quantities.

Why Serving Size Matters for Meal Prep

Most recipes are written for 4 servings. But meal prep often requires 8, 12, or even 20 servings depending on how many meals you're preparing for the week. Manually scaling recipes is tedious and error-prone, and errors in measurement directly affect nutrition and taste.

Getting the quantities right is the foundation of consistent meal prep. Combine this converter with Bento Bunny's AI meal tracking to know exactly what's in each portion.
