Privacy Policy

Last updated: April 14, 2026

Bento Bunny (“we”, “our”, or “the app”) is an AI-powered food journal for iOS. Your privacy matters to us. This policy explains what data the app accesses, how it is used, and your choices.

Data Storage

All food journal entries, nutrition data, water logs, and user preferences are stored locally on your deviceusing Apple’s SwiftData framework. We do not operate a cloud database or sync service for your personal food data. Nothing leaves your device unless described below.

Account & Authentication

You may optionally sign in with your Apple ID to enable cloud-based AI nutrition estimation. When you sign in, we store a minimal account record (a unique user ID and, if you choose to share it, your email address) on our authentication provider, Supabase. We also track aggregate API usage counts (number of requests per day) to enforce fair-use limits. We do not store your food descriptions, photos, or nutrition results on our servers.

You can delete your account at any time from Settings > Account > Delete Account. This permanently removes your server-side data. Your local food journal remains on your device until you uninstall the app.

Apple HealthKit

With your permission, Bento Bunny reads and writes the following HealthKit data types:

  • Reads: Active energy burned, step count, resting energy, body mass, and dietary nutrients.
  • Writes: Dietary energy consumed, protein, carbohydrates, total fat, and water intake.

HealthKit data is never sent to external servers, used for advertising, or shared with third parties. It is used solely to display your activity data alongside your nutrition log within the app.

Camera & Microphone

Camera: Used to photograph meals for AI-powered nutrition estimation and to scan barcodes on packaged foods. Photos are processed on-device or sent to AI services (see below) for food identification. Photos are not stored on our servers.

Microphone & Speech Recognition:Used for voice input so you can describe meals by speaking. Audio is processed by Apple’s on-device speech recognition framework and is not sent to our servers.

AI Nutrition Estimation Services

To estimate nutrition information, the app may send food descriptions or food photos to the following third-party AI services:

  • Perplexity Sonar API (perplexity.ai) — receives food descriptions and/or images to estimate nutritional content.
  • Google Gemini API (Google) — receives food descriptions and/or images as a fallback for nutrition estimation and food identification.

Only the food description text or food photograph is sent. No personal information, health data, or device identifiers are included in these requests. When you are signed in, requests are proxied through our secure server so your API keys are never exposed.

Open Food Facts

When you scan a barcode, the app queries the Open Food Facts open database to look up product information. If a product is not found, you may optionally choose to contribute the food name to the database to help others. No personal information is included in contributions.

Analytics & Tracking

Bento Bunny does not use any analytics SDKs, advertising frameworks, or tracking technologies in the app. We do not collect usage data, device identifiers, or behavioral analytics.

Notifications

With your permission, the app may send local notifications for meal reminders. These are scheduled entirely on-device and do not involve any external push notification service.

Children’s Privacy

Bento Bunny is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect information from children.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated revision date.
