Switch from Cal AI to Bento Bunny
Leaving Cal AI? There's no real data export, so here's how to save what matters, cancel the subscription properly, and restart with free on-device AI logging.

Why People Are Leaving Cal AI
Cal AI proved the idea: snapping a photo of your food beats typing searches. Credit where due. But the execution has worn thin for a lot of users — the subscription runs roughly $30–40 a year as of mid-2026 (with aggressive trial-to-paid flows), accuracy is hit-or-miss on mixed plates, and every photo you take is uploaded to a server for processing. If you've decided the idea is right but the app is wrong, you're in the most common camp of switchers we see. Our honest take on whether Cal AI is worth it, the side-by-side comparison, and the full list of Cal AI alternatives cover the decision; this page covers the move.
The Hard Truth: There's No Real Export
Here's the part we won't sugar-coat: Cal AI doesn't offer a meaningful data export. There's no CSV download of your food history, no import file we can parse. Unlike switching from MyFitnessPal or Cronometer — where Bento Bunny has one-tap importers — leaving Cal AI means leaving the log behind.
That stings less than it sounds. Your food log's job was to inform decisions in the moment; the durable assets are your trends and your targets, and those you can save by hand in five minutes.
Step 1: Screenshot What Matters
Before you cancel, capture the things you'll actually want later:
- Your weight trend chart — screenshot the full history view.
- Your current targets — daily calories and macro split. Screenshot the goals screen.
- Your streak or progress summary, if you want the keepsake.
- Any recent meals you re-log often — a screenshot of the entry makes it ten seconds to recreate by photo.
If Cal AI has been writing your weight to Apple Health, check the Health app — that history may already be safe, and Bento Bunny reads weight from Apple Health automatically.
Step 2: Cancel the Subscription Properly
This is the step people get wrong. Deleting the Cal AI app does not cancel the subscription — App Store subscriptions keep billing until you cancel them explicitly:
- Open Settings on your iPhone.
- Tap [your name] at the top, then Subscriptions.
- Find Cal AI in the list, tap it, and tap Cancel Subscription.
You keep access until the end of the current billing period, so cancel today even if you plan to keep using it this week. If you were charged after a trial you meant to cancel, you can request a refund at reportaproblem.apple.com — Apple decides case by case, but it costs nothing to ask.
Step 3: Start Fresh in Bento Bunny — With Your Goals Carried Over
Download the Bento Bunny beta from TestFlight (free, no card). In onboarding, enter the same calorie target and macro split you screenshotted from Cal AI, plus your goal weight. Your plan continues without a gap — only the app changed.
The logging will feel familiar immediately: point the camera, tap once, meal logged. Two differences you'll notice fast: on iOS 26 and later the AI runs on-device using Apple's Foundation Models, so your photos never leave your phone and it works offline — and there's no subscription gate on the core features.
What Maps to What
- Photo logging → the same core interaction, free, with on-device processing on iOS 26+.
- Barcode scanning → included free.
- Calorie and macro targets → same concepts; re-enter your numbers in goal settings.
- Weight history → carries over via Apple Health if Cal AI was syncing it.
- Food history → doesn't transfer (no export exists on Cal AI's side); your screenshots are the archive.
What You Gain on the Other Side
The same photo-first idea, minus the parts that pushed you out: no $30–40 a year subscription for core features, no photos uploaded to someone else's server, and an export button on our side — your Bento Bunny data can leave with you any time. The trust required to put your food data into an app comes from being able to take it back out.
Ready to Make the Switch?
Screenshot your goals, cancel in Settings → Subscriptions, and log your next meal in Bento Bunny. The whole move takes ten minutes, and the habit doesn't even hiccup.
Keep the photo-logging habit, drop the subscription
Cal AI proved the idea. Bento Bunny does it free, with the AI running on your phone instead of someone else's server.
- Photo logging free — the core feature, not a trial hook
- On-device AI (iOS 26+): your meal photos never leave your phone
- Barcode scanning included free
- Works offline
- Weight history carries over via Apple Health
- Export your data back out any time — the export button Cal AI never gave you
Free to use during the beta. No credit card. Export your data whenever you want.
